Asplenium scolopendrium angustifolium (Hart’s Tongue Fern)

Astilbe ‘Fanal’

Deep red, fluffy plumes appear above serrated, dark green leaves in early summer. This perennial is ideal for a bog garden or moist border, and will thrive in a clay soil as long as it is not allowed to dry out during the summer months. Although it can grow in drier soils, it does need to be in a shady spot.

We also stock ‘Sprite’ and ‘Weiss Gloria’.

Prefers part shade and a wet soil.

Astrantia ‘Gill Richardson’

his is a superb perennial for growing under trees, on a stream bank or in a moist border. This gorgeous variety has large, wine red flowers in early summer.

Prefers part shade and prefer moist soils but will tolerate drier conditions as long as the plants are mulched.

Blechnum spicant (Hard Fern)

As they age the feathery, dark green fronds of this handsome, evergreen ‘hard fern’ spread semi-horizontally to form an attractive, rosette-like shape. One of our recommended varieties, it provides all-year interest for shady areas of the garden and companionship for shade-loving, woodland plants, it also copes well in dry shade.

This stunning plant is covered with large pink bells, darkly spotted inside during early to mid summer. It forms a neat mound and is loved by bees.

Centurea ‘Purple Heart’

Centaurea montana ‘Purple Heart’ is a striking variety with white, spidery flowerheads with a violet-purple centre. It’s more tolerant of dry soils than other varieties, and may be grown in sunny borders and gravel gardens. Like other cultivars, ‘Purple Heart’ is easy-to-grow, bearing clumps of mid-green leaves that perfectly complement early summer flowers. Remove spent flower stems to prolong flowering.

Prefers full sun / part shade and a free draining soil.

Cephalaria gigantea

A superb perennial for the back of the border, with attractive pinnate foliage and bearing in summer, on very tall stems, large, Scabious-like creamy flowers with a subtle hint of palest yellow. It somehow manages to be both majestic and understated and it is fantastic for cutting.

Chelone obliqua

Chelone obliqua (Turtlehead) is an undeservedly uncommon plant with dark pink snapdragon flowers atop stiff upright stems, set off by dark green foliage. It’s one of the last plants to flower, late summer and into autumn, in the water garden before everything goes to sleep and is a good doer without being invasive or troublesome. The flowers are followed by attractive seed pods.

Prefers a wet or continually moist soil in sun or part shade.
