Ginkgo biloba

Known as a ‘living fossil’, it is the sole survivor of an ancient group of trees that outlived the dinosaurs. A deciduous conifer, the Ginkgo will leaf up in the spring with beautiful bright green leaves that flutter in a breeze and in the autumn mellow to a butter yellow colour then fall to the ground. The leaves are fan-shaped and have two or more distinct lobes. It has an irregular, spreading crown and deeply cracked, brown bark. A large tree but very slow growing…It is a gorgeous specimen!

Prefers full sun and a free draining soil.

Gladiolus ‘Bimbo’

Deep orange-brown flowers with dark burgundy edges are the hallmark of this exotic-looking gladiolus. Rising above sword-shaped, dark grey-green leaves, the sturdy and erect flowering spikes appear over a fortnight in summer to grace the cottage garden, cut-flower vase, or greenhouse. May need to be lifted for the winter.

We also stock ‘June’, ‘Lemonicious’, ‘Lola Montez’ & ‘Priscilla’.

Prefers full sun in very free draining soil.

Gladiolus byzantinus

Perfect for bridging the gap between the last of the spring bulbs and the first of the summer perennials, this is a gorgeous, late-spring flowering bulb bearing spikes of funnel-shaped flowers in the most intense magenta pink. It works well as a planting partner to silver-leafed plants and also in meadow-style plantings, mixed with other bright colours. In the right site, it can be naturalised, too. It also makes a great focal point as part of a container display, and makes an excellent cut flower.

Prefers full sun in a free draining soil.

Gladiolus murielae (Acidanthera)

With sword-like foliage and fragrant white flowers in late summer and early Autumn this is a must for plant-lovers! The tall stems branch to carry a number of flowerheads on one stalk which nod above the foliage. Easy to grow in any sunny garden and also grows well in containers.

Prefers full sun in a very free draining soil.

Hakonechloa ‘Sunflare’

Emerging each spring a fresh chartreuse-yellow, the foliage soon develops contrasting deep crimson tips, and as the season progresses the colours become richer – particularly when grown in full sun. In smaller gardens, it is a great grass for a pot, but if there is room, try planting it in generous drifts – or use it to line the edges of a path for a jaw-dropping display.

Hebes

We stock a selection of Hebes: ‘Burgundy Blush’, ‘Caledonia’, ‘Claret Crush’, ‘Pascal’, ‘Pink Pixie’ & ‘Purple Pixie’.

All are evergreen and are in the smaller range of Hebes with pink / purple/ blue / white flowers throughout late spring and summer and most have attractively coloured foliage. They look great in pots as well as the border where they will all attract bees.

Prefers full sun / part shade and a well-drained soil.

Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’

A succession of dark copper-red daisy-like flowers up to 8cm across with prominent, dark brown centres from mid to late summer. This beautiful perennial is ideal towards the back of a border. It makes a wonderful companion for ornamental grasses, bees and butterflies love it and it makes an excellent cut flower too.

We also stock ‘Sahin’s Early Flowerer’.

Prefers full sun and a well-drained soil.

Helleborus ‘Merlin’

A beautiful compact, bushy evergreen perennial with marbled, sometimes veined foliage. Clusters of cream outward-facing flowers, flushed with various shades of pink, which deepen with age, appear in profusion in late winter and early spring.

Hesperantha ‘Pink Princess’

This is one of the best perennials for providing late season colour. From late summer to early winter, clusters of gladioli-like, star-shaped blooms, open wide and held high on strong stems, excellent as cut flower also.

Heuchera ‘Peach Crisp’

A tough, clump-forming semi-evergreen perennial grown mainly for it’s coloured ruffled foliage. In spring and summer small ivory bell-shaped flowers appear on tall stems. It’s ideal for growing at the front of a border, and is also a fantastic choice for growing in a pot.

We also stock ‘Forever Purple’, ‘Huckleberry’, ‘Indian Summer Boysenberry’, ‘Lime Marmalade’, ‘Marmalade’ & ‘Paris’.

Hosta ‘June’

This lovely, compact variegated perennial is a great addition to shady areas where it forms an attractive, dense mound of smooth, heart-shaped, blue-green leaves, irregularly splashed with bright yellow and greenish yellow in their centres. In summer it produces spikes of lavender-grey trumpet-shaped flowers.

Prefers part shade / full shade and moist soil.

Hyacinth ‘Delft Blue’

Extremely fragrant, dense flowered spikes of soft, porcelain blue flowers floating atop erect, lance-shaped bright green leaves, this beauty blooms in mid spring. Plant it where you will be able to enjoy its perfume daily in a border or patio pot.
